Natural Cures for Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

by Claire Addison

If you have hot flashes and don’t want to resort to HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), good for you. In spite of what medical professionals may say, this could very well be the best course of action for most people going through hot flashes (this is opinion only and not intended to replace the advice of a medical professional). The fact is, many people benefit from using natural cures for hot flashes and night sweats.
If indeed the problem is hormonal, as conventional medicine says, there are specific herbs that bring down high levels of FSH and LH, the hormones thought to be behind hot flashes. Blue cohosh is one such herb, which should be used carefully as there are a few serious contraindications associated with it. It’s best to seek the help of an herbalist when it comes to such herbs, although some, such as motherwort, are gentle enough to generally be safe for home use. Basil and Thyme essential oils are also thought to lessen the severity of hot flashes when the smell is inhaled, and these oils are easy enough to come across in any store that carries essential oils.
But the simplest natural cures for hot flashes and night sweats may be found much closer to home. That’s because many foods are thought to be triggers for night sweats- spicy foods, hot drinks, white sugar, and intoxicants like coffee, cigarettes, and alcohol should all be avoided as these are associated with hot flashes.
Taking care of ones’s body is often the best cure for much of what ails us, and here again we must cite the importance of exercise. Exercise increases endorphin levels, which plummet when hot flashes occur- this could explain the feelings of anxiety that frequently accompany such episodes. At the same time, it decreases FSH and LH levels. It’s thought that even exercising just three times a week for 20 minutes can have great benefits in terms of lessening the severity of hot flashes, so go out there and move your body if you don’t already.
