Organic terry nappies are one part of the solution to reducing your baby’s environmental footprint

by Claire Addison

In this day and age of the processed product, we are encouraged to buy as much throwaway and one-use stuff as possible.  There is no end to what we can buy that is solely designed and produced to be used once, only to end up in landfill to lie there for hundreds of years to come.  One of the most appalling applications of the throwaway industry has been the push for people the world over the use disposable nappies or diapers.  The real worry here is that it is these very babies who will grow into adults who one day have to deal with the enormous landfill and waste problems that we, their parents, left them.  What a gift it will be to our children if we can reduce out footprint on the earth now so that they have less to worry about in the future when we are gone.  Our parents and grandparents may have made mistakes regarding the environment and our health because they did not know better, but today we as a society have the facts readily at hand due to the information spread of the internet and the wide media coverage of every part of the civilised world.

There is no longer any excuse for us to be using and disposing of items at the rate that we are encouraged to.  The companies who make these products sell to demand and if we stop buying them, there will be a decrease in the production.  As mentioned before, the disposable nappy or disposable diaper problem is such that it contributes a large amount of landfill to our already landfill-laden planet, but an even greater insidious problem lies within disposable baby nappies.  The inherent chemical compounds and materials that are used to make the disposables are toxic and poisonous, and the production of disposable nappies creates the most toxic man-made chemical ever created in history: dioxin.  This chemical pollutes our waterways and is a key contributing factor to the rise in chronic diseases such as cancer in the modern population.

There is no easy answer to these large and looming problems but thankfully it is not hard to reduce, reuse and recycle within your own home and begin the process of reducing your baby’s enironmental footprint at the source.  Disposable nappies are expensive and vastly inferior compared to the quality organic terry nappies which are available for babies today. Terry nappies are not the only solution to baby and toddler diapering, but along with prefolds, they are unquestionably the most versatile.  Even as they can be used for nappying your baby, they can also be used as burp cloths, spill cloths, cleaning and drying props, impromptu bibs and change mats, mats for nappy-free time on the floor, and when no longer needed for baby will become a vital part of your household’s rag cupboard, being used until they are threadbare.

You will definitely get your money’s worth out of organic terry nappies, so please don’t hesitate to buy at least a couple of packs in readiness for your new baby, as you will not regret your purchase and you can rest assured that every time you use them you are doing that bit for the environment and saving your baby’s health, both now and well into the future.
