Hair loss can occur for many reasons.  Often it is cause by disease such as diabetes.  Excessive exposure to smoke, sun and stress can also lead to hair loss.  Believe it or not, even dandruff can contribute to hair loss.  A common reason is that the body is short on vitamins that are known to help hair grow and maintain its strength.  That is why many people decide to take vitamins for hair growth.  The truth is that the condition of your hair is very much related to the overall condition of your body.  Thus, if you have any nutritional deficiencies, it is going to show up in your hair.

What Vitamins are Good for Hair Growth?

Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)

Vitamin B5 works to help improve your scalps blood flow.  It may also help your hair maintain a bright color.  It is important that you not take too much B5 because this can actually impact the nitric oxide in your blood. If your blood flow is hindered, this can actually make your hair fall out.

Recommended Dose: 4mg 3 times a day

Vitamin C

Vitamin C works to improve the circulation in your scalp.  It can help the functioning of the many capillaries that carry blood to the follicles. It also helps your body to produce collagen, which is necessary for healthy tissues.  Some research shows that Vitamin C deficiency is one cause of hair breakage, so it is not only a good vitamin for hair growth but it can also help your body maintain the hair that it has.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)

It has been scientifically shown that a riboflavin deficiency can lead to hair loss.  This is thanks to the fact that riboflavin is critical to cellular repair.  When cells die and new ones are not generated, hair loss can be the direct result.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E can help to improve the circulation in your scalp and thus improve the growth of your hair.   It is believed to be especially beneficial, because the antioxidant properties help increase the rate of cellular replication which increases the speed that hair grows. Healthy hair is related to a healthy immune system, and Vitamin E works to improve your immune function.  Vitamin E is believed to be one of the best vitamins for faster hair growth.

Recommended Dose: 400IU to 800 IU

Magnesium – In one clinical study, rats that were denied dietary magnesium was shown to loss their hair in bunches.  An imbalance of calcium and magnesium in the body is a widely known cause of hair loss.  Taking too much calcium and not enough magnesium will result in hair loss in many people.   This is common in women who eat too much sugar.  This is a very common reason that women take vitamins for hair growth.

Recommended Dosage: 400 mg a day

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin works to help improve the circulation in your scalp.  The better your circulation the better your hair will grow.

Recommended Dose: 50 mg 3 times a day

One thing you want to avoid is taking large doses of Vitamin A.  This can actually lead to hair loss, although the loss can be reversed with the excess Vitamin A is removed from the diet.  The key thing to remember is that there is no single best vitamin for hair growth.  Rather, your body needs all of the above mentioned vitamins.
