Organic Food – A Waste of Money?

by Vincent Polisi on October 7, 2009

If we were to listen to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, we might decide that spending money on organics is a waste of money.

In a study recently published, they reported that there are no nutritional benefits of choosing organic foods versus conventionally prepared foods.

Their study, which reviewed scientific papers from the past 50 years concluded that there is no evidence to support the selection of organics based on nutritionally superiority.

Many are saying that this study deals a huge blow to the organic industry

I disagree completely!

Sure, it would have been great if the study had come out and said that all organic foods are nutritiously superior.

But is that why most people choose organics?

I don’t think so.

I don’t know about you, but I feed my family organic food because of what is NOT in it. (Like harmful chemicals, antibiotics and hormones)

I didn’t give my son organic strawberries for breakfast this morning because I thought he was going to get more Vitamin C from them.  I did it because I was concerned about the pesticides that are in conventionally grown strawberries and what they can do to his little body.

(Especially since I learned from the Environmental Working Group that these are one of the most important fruits to choose organic.)

I wouldn’t spray the strawberries with raid, rinse them and hand them to him.  So it makes sense that I would choose organic over conventional.  And it has ABSOULTELY nothing to do with nutritional value.

So, forgive me American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, but I don’t think your study means a thing.  I still choose organics for my family!
